Onder de titel The World Beyond the Headlines organiseert het International House een reeks lezingen which aims to bring scholars and journalists together to consider major international news stories and how these stories are covered.
Vanavond sprak David Cole (Professor of Law, Georgetown University) over de desastreuze gevolgen van the preventive paradigm in de Amerikaanse binnenlandse en buitenlandse politiek. Samen met Jules Lobel (eveneens Professor of Law, University of Pittsburgh) schreef hij het boek Less Safe, Less Free: Why America is Losing the War on Terror.
Hope is more the consequence of action than its cause. Whereas the experience of the spectator creates fatalism, the experience of the agent creates hope.
Deze woorden, aangehaald door Cole en afkomstig uit het boek The Future of American Progressivism van Roberto Unger en Cornel West, wil ik onthouden. De avond werd op video opgenomen en is hier als podcast te downloaden.
